Peptides turn up on almost every anti-aging label now, usually next to a promise. It is worth separating the chemistry from the marketing, because the chemistry is genuinely interesting and the promises usually are not.
What a peptide is
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids. Amino acids are what proteins are built from, and collagen — the protein that gives skin its structure — is one of those proteins. So a peptide is, in effect, a fragment of the language your skin already speaks.
That matters because of size. A whole collagen molecule applied to the surface of your face cannot get in; it is far too large. It sits on top, holds a little water, and washes off. A peptide is small enough to penetrate the outer layer, which is why it can do something a jar of collagen cannot.
What they actually do
Most cosmetic peptides work as signals. Skin is constantly repairing itself, and part of how it decides to repair is by reading fragments of broken-down collagen floating around. A signal peptide mimics that fragment. Your skin reads it as evidence that repair is needed and steps up its own production accordingly.
In practice, over months rather than days, that shows up as:
- Firmer-looking skin. Better support underneath means less slackness at the jaw and cheek.
- Softer fine lines. Not erased — softened, in the way a crease relaxes when the fabric underneath is fuller.
- A more even surface. Skin that repairs well simply looks smoother.
The peptide in our serum, Vera, is Hexapeptide-11 at 2%, alongside a hydroxyproline peptide. Both are on the signalling side of the family.
What they don't do
This is the part most labels skip.
- They are not a retinoid. Retinoids drive cell turnover hard and have decades of clinical data behind them. Peptides work more gently and more slowly. That gentleness is the point if your skin reacts to retinoids, but it is a trade, not a free upgrade.
- They will not remove a deep, set line. A line you can see when your face is completely relaxed has structural depth. Topical peptides soften how it reads; they do not fill it in.
- They do nothing about pigment. Dark patches, sun spots and under-eye shadow are pigment and blood-vessel questions. Different ingredients, different article.
- They are not sun protection. Nothing you apply in the evening protects you the next morning. Sunscreen remains the single most effective anti-aging product there is.
How to actually use them
Peptides are water-loving and generally sit best in a light layer close to the skin. Apply the serum to clean, slightly damp skin, then seal it with a moisturiser. Morning and evening both work; there is no photosensitivity to plan around, which is one of the reasons peptides suit people who cannot tolerate acids or retinoids.
They also layer well. Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, panthenol and vitamin E all sit alongside peptides without arguing. The one combination worth spacing out is a strong exfoliating acid in the same layer — very low pH can degrade some peptides before they get anywhere.
How long before you see anything
Give it eight to twelve weeks of consistent use. Skin turns over roughly every four weeks in your twenties and more slowly after that, and you are waiting on structural change rather than surface change. If a product promises a visible difference in a week, it is promising hydration — which is real, and immediate, and not the same thing.

Peptides themselves are among the better-tolerated actives. What usually causes trouble in a peptide product is everything else in the bottle: fragrance, essential oils, high alcohol content.
